My son's DLink gaming adapter connected to his 360 is going out. Can we just buy a wireless router to replace it or does it specifically have to be a gaming adapter?

A router is a device used for multiple connection whether wired or wirelessly connected to it.
The gaming adapter is just a wireless receiver for signals from the router if playing games wirelessly is your concern.
I believe you need both devices (the router and gaming adapter).
