What is a fairly good processor for gaming?

I'd like to put together a fairy good gaming PC. What processor type would you recommend?

I was thinking a Core 2 Quad...but maybe not.

What is a fairly good processor for gaming?
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4 Ghz proccessor is VERY nice.
Reply:If i want to spend a bit more money i would go for Intel E8400 Wolfdale and for budget set up i would go for AMD 5000+ black / after market CPU cooler or 5600+ Windsor/stock cooler. Ultimately the graphics card and a reliable power supply are more important IMO
Reply:Most of the current games don't use that many threads so you'd not get full value for a Quad till games that due come out. That said the price of the Q6600 has dropped down into the $270 range which is pretty good. The Core2Duo E6750 is around $190.
Reply:It is a nice processor, a little over kill. So you could get a FASTER processor for the same amount of money, but with 4 cores you wouldn't have to upgrade any time soon.
Reply:I think AMD X2 Dual Core was good enough only when you on low budget. Then spend high budget on graphic card.
