What would be the benefit to yahoo users to design a system of points then deduct points for point-gaming?

The yahoo answers system gives out points but if you are guilty of "point-gaming" you lose points. How does this benefit yahoo users? How does it benefit YOU specifically? Does it just make it more likely YOU will get points, or what?

It is not the users, of course, that designed the sytem. It is the YA team. Pointgaming, like all violations, causes a loss of points. It is considered to be cheating. The points are in place to promote participation, not to stimulate cheating for them. So a loss of points is set in place as a sanction to hopefully make people pay attention to the rules and use the site properly.
