What is an instance for the gaming industry?

What is an instance for the gaming industry? Is it the data for a single player - user info and game record? How is it kept and processed at the server level? Does each instance require a CPU core to process? Thus quad-core processor is better?

THANK YOU!

Its kind of vague in your question. To me, a game instance is the program running, so a single instance means only running one copy of the game at once (multiple instances would benefit from multiple cores, but would not require it). Although an instance could be the data for a player... in which case it would be saved in a database on the server side.
