I will need it for internet access, gaming and work. I will need the basic programs such as Word a long with publisher, powerpoint and excel.

I have around a budget of £300-500.

I dont mind if it is not flashy or amazing, i jjst need something that does the job.

you're lucky to be in the UK!

the Dell Vostro 1500 is on sale there (ends at March 5th) and with specs you normally pay £800 for.

check it out what you can get for just £449 (e.g. Penryn T8300, 3gb ram, GeForce 8600M GT 256mb, Vista Business ... etc.)

my only recommendation: upgrade the battery to a 9 cell.
Reply:hp pavilion

Reply:Get a DELL. They are the best. Have had 3 DELL computers, and nothign has ever gone wrong. Currently have a DELL laptop, it is great for using the internet and playing games. The laptop I have is the DELL INSPIRON 640m.

Hope this helps xxxx
Reply:go for dell, you'll pay alot of money for a hp one that is likely to malfunction particularly the wireless card-loads of people have had this problem-and their customer service is AWFUL!! go for dell
Reply:depends on the game and its settings.

most laptops with an intel core 2 duo and shared graphics can run most games form the past few years.

my macbook can run the games in the orange box (HL2, EP1,EP2,portal,TF2)

However it gets incredibly hot.

For the best gaming laptop get one with dedicated graphics, but you will have to pay for it.

also you may want one with wifi that supports the "n" standard because its the fastest possible depending on your router.
Reply:tescos do a good acer laptop for £350, my sister bought her kids one at christmas, it has a built in webcam too. xx
Reply:Try acer or dell.
Reply:I'd usually recommend a mac, however you want it for gaming so i dont know.
Reply:Tesco are currently selling Dell %26amp; Medion Laptops for £399 both down from £599, might be worth a look, think of the Clubcard Points!!!
Reply:Second hand Apple ibook, with OSX 10 or later will run all that and more and will never get a viral infection or worms unlike anything running Windows. Open your mind to the wonderful world of the Mac. Do not believe anyone who says they will limit what you can do, I've used Macs for ever and never had a problem of any kind- free yourself from Microsoft and Windows
Reply:A laptop isn't much use for gaming, the graphics and sound are on board and laptops are a between PC medium rather than a stand alone and work computer.

Whatever you buy won't perform to an acceptable level as a games platform. A second hand PC with a half decent graphics card falls within your budget.

If you can wait till quad core arrives, dual core machines will be going cheap.
