Go to a computer store and tell them that you want a computer with the following components inside at a minimum...
2GB of RAM
Intel Core Duo (2Ghz per core) processor
DirectX9 graphics card (NVidia GeForce 7xxx series or ATi equivalent)
800dpi mouse
17" monitor
If you can, get better specs than described if you have the money, but those should do for a serious gamer on a budget.
Don't get an AMD processor as they're worse for both value and performance.
You probably want to get a DirectX 10 graphics card if you can (NVidia Geforce 8800GTX or 8800GTS) as these support DirectX10 which is what Windows Vista will support and the latest games will be taking advantage of it.

Reply:I you have $2K to spend on a PC I would recommend you research the various pieces of hardware so that you know what you are talking about and then go to a local Computer Shop (reputable of course) and have them build you one.
That way you get what you really want and they're local if you have any problems.
I just bought a Dell XPS but it's not rated for "high end" games/gamers. I opted for the 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, and only 1 Gig of RAM.
A top end Dual core is going to cost about $1000. A 2.6 GHz will run abut $500. DDR2 SDRAM runs about $150 for 1 Gig. Then add on all the rest of the hardware.
Bottom line is that you can eat up $2K real fast.

Does a CRT monitor make that much difference when gaming?
I've heard that CRTs have truer colors, and are superior for gaming, is this true?

CRTs do have a better range of colours. They also tend to have less blurring of quickly moving images.
That being said LCDs are making significant improvements in both areas.
For the best range of colours look for a LCD that has TCO'03 certification. This has requirements for the saturation of the red green and blue primary colours that are used to make up all the colours on the screen. It also has requirements for gray scale tracking, another traditional problem for LCDs.
LCD manufacturers are regularly quoting panel switching speeds. Pick the lowest value to get the least blurry image. Check the specs though, a low gray-to-gray speed is better than a low black-to-white speed. (seems like it should be the other way around but it is not.)
CRTs also handle multiple resolutions better than LCDs. So if your graphics card can't hack a decent frame-rate at 1440 by 900 (19" widescreen native res.) it is not going to be as crisp a picture when you drop the resolution.
However, CRTs are huge space and power hogs, and have to deal with all sorts of geometry problems.

You need a router. If you don't want to spend up to 200 dollars on a router, for 40 dollars, you can buy the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB connector. So much better. It only works with Window XP, but once you install the softaware and register your wii (its really simple), you have wi-fi. It was made for people without routers, so if you don't have one, just buy this.
If you choose to go the way of the router, it's a little harder. here it is in simple steps.
i) Go into wii settings
ii) Go to the third page (I think 3rd) and click internet.
iii) It should have 3 boxes going down. Click the first one.*
iv) Click Wireless*
v) it will either ask, or just start to search for an access point. If it asks, just click yes.
vi) If your router is password-protected you will have to enter the password ( it will pop up right away once the connection is found)
vii) Once you enter the password, you should be done, it might ask you to shut down your wii (it will do it automatically, you don't have to press the button). Just click yes.
viii) You should be done! now you have wifi.
If you decide to go the way of the USB connector.
i) install the software that comes on the CD when you buy the pacakge.
ii) Once the software is installed, an icon on your desktop toolbar should be there. Click into it.

I am looking to buy a gaming system for my husband for Christmas. From what I am aware of, my choices are Playstation brand, XBox brand, and Nintendo. I'm particularly thinking of purchasing a Playstation 2 because it's only $129.99 at the store. Shared graphics is far less expensive but also far less capable and is generally considered unfit to play modern games as well as run graphically intensive programs such as Adobe Flash.

I am looking to buy my nephew a PC for his 12th birthday. My friend has his old pc he wants to sell me for $200. Its complete with a 17" flatscreen CRT monitor, keyboard/laser mouse, 2.1 sound system %26amp; a tower with an AMD 2.13GHz THORTON core CPU, 768MB PC2100 RAM, ATI 9600PRO video card, SOUNDBLASTER LIVE sound card, CD-RW, DVD-ROM %26amp; a 20GB hard drive with a fresh install of WINXP PRO SP2, ZONEALARM firewall, AVG anti virus, NERO, EVEREST 2.0, WINDOWS REGESTRY CLEANER %26amp; a few other programs incuding a GAMPAD %26amp; a couple demo games like FEAR, DOOM 3, HALO %26amp; SWAT 4. Is this a good rig for a 12 year old? I dont have alot of money %26amp; dont think I could build a better PC for $200 complete like it is. Also I know it works fine as its my friends old gaming rig. What do you think is it a good deal? He might take $180 if I show him the cash in $20 bills you know.

for $200 for that system is a good deal. but that system cannot play some of the decent games like Lost Planet, Crysis, Bioshock etc... the system is a good start for a 12 years old. i say go for it.

The only thing I would recommend is adding a larger Hard Drive later as a secondary drive and pretty soon a new Video card, since most new games won't play at all on the ATI 9600. The RAM is good for gaming on XP and the CPU is good as well. You should also get a good Antivirus, my suggestion is Trend Micro - won't slow down your system like Norton will, and just as powerful, plus Spysweeper for anti Spyware. Without those 2 programs that computer won't last long. Don't let him use Limewire or any of those free song downloading programs. They are virus superhighways!

WinXP alone prolly will take up about 3 - 5 GB of space. With the system restore feature switched on, that will cost an additional 1 - 2 GB. In total it already munched up 4 - 7 GB of space, leaving only 12GB+ of space.
I suggest getting another 80GB HDD for your nephew. HDD nowadays are pretty cheap. I am sure you don't mind coughing up a little more for your beloved nephew. They will love you for it!!!!!

I would look at upgrading the video card, though - the 9600 is pretty lacking for todays games with only four pixel pipelines. I'd suggest something with at leat 12 pixel pipelines or more like a Radeon X1650, or a Geforce 7600 or better. Both of these cards are under $100 and would greatly improve the system performance.

Going to collage soon, I think it would be wise to invest in a laptop instead of a new desktop. However, I wouldn't know the first thing about laptops and I'm on a tight budget. I'd also like to take my games to collage with me.

Also, check out other HP models you may like, because I saw myself a notebook for $899 with 1024 MB Graphics memory (yeah, 1 GB on it's Graphic Card memory). That's of course, not mentioning the screaming fast Intel Celeron Core Duo processor.

How amazing is the PS3? Why would someone pay hundreds of dollars for such a gaming console?
First, a couple of corrections:
-PS3 games are $60 NOT $90.
-BluRay players go for at least $900 NOT $500 (unless you're talking about a no-name brand player).
Second, the PS3 is well worth the $600 price tag if you consider that it's NOT just a gaming console... it's MUCH more than that. IT'S A MEDIA HUB. If you're only interested in gaming.... then go get yourself an Xbox and stop bitching about the PS3.
If you're into technology and NextGen electronics, then the PS3 is the unit for you. As I said before.... IT DOES MORE THAN JUST PLAY GAMES, and that's what SONY wanted this console to be..... A HI-TECH MEDIA HUB.
So again... if you want a console strictly for playing games, go pick up an Xbox and wait for the next HALO to come out.
If you want a console for playing games PLUS anything else you can throw at it, then get a PS3!!
Reply:Well, I bought one because I had the money. It does a lot of cool stuff. You can browse the internet. It plays Blu Ray DVD. It is high definition gaming. It's got a huge hard drive. But if I didn't come into some money, I would not have bought it. It costs way too much for a video game player.
Reply:The PS3 was a total bomb, you're correct, why would someone pay a ridiculous amount of money for a game console and then $90 a game when there aren't that many games out there for it. The price should come down a considerable amount within the next year or so but I still wouldn't waste my money on a PS3, your money would be much well spent on a XBox 360 or a Nintendo Wii.

Reply:just because of the blu ray. a stand alone player would cost more than that. not forgetting all of it's other features like media and free on line play. and you can hook up a load of removable devices into it like compact flash card,memory stick duo,mini SD,USB sticks and a whole lot more. it also has more stuff built in than the 360. like wireless and a high def player (blu ray)

Out of all the international gaming ladders ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_ladder ) on the net, which is the biggest? Which has the most amount of people playing it's games, the most traffic on it's site, etc. I have a way of measuring any and all suggestions, so whoever suggests the most active site dedicated to running a gaming league (game doesn't matter to me, as long as it's not a suscriber MMO) will get the points. Who is gonna make sure online gaming is fair and can prove they are not cheating the online gamblers?
I am a online poker player, and I lost bunch money threw past years, and I felt suspicious about some of the cards the way they were running? and I just wondering is there any types of commitee to department to keep those sites straight...

I make my living playing poker. I play online between 20 to 70 hours a week. I play on several popular sites. I can assure you: It's straight. There is no reason for the site to " cheat" or "Steal" money from you. They make millions running the way they do. Why jeopardize that ? No need. Playing online can be different than live. You're going to see a lot more hands, a lot more situations. Also depending on the limits you are playing you are going to find a lot more loose players.
Bottom line: Maybe you need to change the way you're playing. How's your bankroll management? Do you go on tilt easily? Do you play the right limits? So many questions you can ask yourself. Practice, keep note of your sessions, analyze your play, work on your game. Poker is tough! Just don't blame the site for your losses. Be honest with yourself, and do the best you can to get better.
By the way, the answer below talk about "collusion" Don't worry about those either: In the long run they can't even beat the rake!!! Having 3 players who work together at the same table can't even break even in the long run! Period. And you don't find many of those collusion anymore. The sites are hard on them, and can easily identify them.
If you have a doubt when you're playing, move from the table, contact the site. If you doubt about collusion between 2 players at your table. Give their name to the site. Most of the site can look to the history of those players, and if they see that, those two play often together and their play look suspitious: They are out! And won't be able to withdrawl their money.

Reply:even if the site is legit. i know people that play online poker as a group. they go on a table together while they talk on the phone. telling each other what hands they have. then they gang up on one player and split the earnings.

If you suspect something wrong is going on simply dont play.
Had a friend who played backgammon on one site, and he told me that even though the site claimed to have random rolls, that wasnt the case... every time you doubled the cube, 7 out of 10 times the next roll was a double... i saw it and was amazed.....
